Review of Mythos Restaurant

Our Review of Mythos Restaurant

During our most recent trip to Orlando, we visited tons of great restaurants on and off property at both Universal Studios and at the Disney World Resort. On our first full day at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure, we made lunch reservations for the award-winning Mythos Restaurant.  Here is our full review of Mythos Restaurant which is in The Lost Continent in Universal’s Islands of Adventure.

According to everything that we have read and heard about Mythos, we were excited to dine here.  I mean, let’s be honest, when you are awarded the “World’s Best Theme Park Restaurant” by Theme Park Insider, our expectations were high!  Here is what Universal has to say about Mythos Restaurant:

This award-winning, full-service restaurant offers exceptional modern cuisine in a mythical setting that sparks the imagination. Featuring a mix of Mediterranean, Asian and American fare, Mythos’ casually elegant menu includes options like Greek salad, pad Thai, sandwiches, burgers, and more. There’s also a separate children’s menu for little ones.

The exterior features towering rock formations, cascading waterfalls, and ancient figures carved into the side of the restaurant. The cavernous interior creates the feel of a craggy grotto on a distant ocean. Outdoor seating offers a spectacular view of the park’s inland sea and colorful lands.

Mythos Appetizer Review

Knowing that we had intentions of doing a full review, we decided to try as much as we could eat (as a family of four).  For our appetizers, we chose two different options.  Our server recommended the Spanakopita Dip ($11) which is a dip that blends spinach, feta cheese, lemon, and fresh herbs and is topped with fresh cucumber, tomato, and olives.  The dip is served in a bowl that is surrounded by hot fresh pita chips seasoned with za’atar spice.

In addition to the Spanakopita, our choice was the Shrimp Sushi Katsu Roll ($13) which resembled a sushi roll that featured shrimp, sweet soy, and wasabi aioli rolled up and flash fried with a panko crust.

Both appetizers were delicious and were just right for our family of four. Nothing too filling, as we had plenty of food left to eat.

Mythos Entrée Reviews

For our entrees, three of us ordered from the adult menu and one of our girls ordered from the kids’ menu.

First up, I ordered the Mediterranean Lamb Shank with Rapini and Couscous. I do not have the price for this item as it has been removed from the menu and replaced with a Lamb Loin.  I believe the price was $36, but I am not 100% sure about that.  While it is no longer available, I can assure you that it was amazing.  The lamb shank was very tender and flavorful.  I am not usually a fan of rapini, but this was seasoned and cooked well, and the couscous was one of my favorite things on the plate.

Next, my wife went out of her comfort zone and ordered the Pad Thai ($25) which came with rice noodles, mixed vegetables, chicken, and shrimp tossed in a mild sweet and sour peanut sauce topped with crispy wonton strips.  My wife is usually a steak and salad person, so I was impressed with her trying something different, especially with all the other options available on the menu.  Her review was that it was very good, but the portion size was large. There was a lot of food left over, so two people could easily have shared this dish. However, the flavor was amazing.

My oldest daughter ordered from the adult menu, and she went with the table-favorite Fork, Knife, and Spoon Grilled Cheese ($18) which offered up a unique presentation of a classic 3 cheese sandwich, set in a Tuscan tomato soup, with crispy pork belly and garnished with homemade chips. Obviously, we all tried each other’s food, and this was by far the best thing on our table.  We did enjoy our meals, but this grilled cheese was very well done, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it!

Finally, our youngest daughter ordered from the kid’s menu.  While she has an adventurous side, anytime a menu offers up any sort of pasta, it’s game over.  On the kids’ menu, they had a Penne pasta with Garlic Cream Sauce ($8) which was garlic cream sauce served over fresh penne pasta. While she probably would have enjoyed it the way that it was offered on the menu, she asked if she could get it with a red (marinara) sauce and they obliged. In my opinion, it was nothing special, but anytime you can get a kid to clean their plate, it is a win in my book.

Mythos Desserts and Drinks

Because we were in the parks and had plans of visiting other snack and dessert places around the parks (and eventually CityWalk), we decided against ordering any dessert.  That said, my wife and I did enjoy a couple of mixed drinks. With my meal, I went with the Immortal Old Fashioned ($14.50) which was Four Roses bourbon, crème de framboise, and Cointreau liqueur finished with Peychaud’s and orange bitters. This was a great take on the classic Old Fashioned that was done well.  On the way out, I ordered a Mythos Potion of the Gods – $14.50 which was a clean mix of Malibu Coconut rum, Captain Morgan Spiced rum, black raspberry liqueur, orange, cranberry, pineapple juices with a float of Cruzan 137 rum.  This was a great drink!  It could have been too sweet if not mixed properly, but they did a great job of making a nice, strong drink that tasted great!

Overall Thoughts and Final Review of Mythos Restaurant

Our experience at Mythos was absolutely excellent. It was most likely one of the best-tasting restaurants inside a Theme Park for the price point. While we have enjoyed other restaurants, for the portion sizes, the price point for a theme park, atmosphere, and service, we give this restaurant a 9 out of 10. Keep in mind that since some of the food is heavy, you might want to take it easy for a few hours afterward. We ended up walking back to the hotel shortly thereafter to hang by the pool, instead of riding rides in the summer heat. I imagine if we had stayed and hung out in the park after eating that food, we probably would have been uncomfortable.
