Animal Kingdom Tree of Life

If you have ever visited any of the parks at Walt Disney World, you already know that the words “Disney World” and (insert ANY diet name here) do not go well together.  While this is the case, if you are living a Keto lifestyle, you can still enjoy your trip while eating Keto at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  The longer that I have gone on my Keto journey, the easier it has become to completely overcome any cravings for carbs and sugar.  That said, Disney World is a little harder to tackle.  But, if you can stay strong and avoid the temptations, it can be done!

Focus on Staying in Ketosis – Not on the Caloric Intake

When I am at home, I am very strict with my caloric intake as well as my macros.  At Disney World, I focus more on staying in keto without really focusing on the calories.  I mean, I am on vacation, and I am walking like 10 miles a day while in the parks.  One thing to remember is that if you are in a table-service restaurant, let the host know that you have certain dietary restrictions and they will send out a chef to discuss your options.  You can almost always make the changes necessary to stay in ketosis.  With the quick-service restaurants and snacks, it can be a little harder, but still very possible. In this post, I will be covering my day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  On this visit, we had a mix of table service and quick service, so let’s dive in!

Eating a Keto Breakfast at Tusker House for Donald Duck’s Safari Breakfast

To start out our day, we started out over at Starbucks (Creature Comforts) to grab a Venti Iced Coffee with heavy cream and a couple of sweet-n-lows (a common theme in all the parks, and a great way to start the day)!  After getting my caffeine, we went over to Tusker House for Donald Duck’s Safari Breakfast.  Not only did the kids love this place for the character interaction, but I really enjoyed my keto breakfast buffet as well.  As usual, I had scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage.  I simply stuck with the eggs and meat this morning, and for some reason, I couldn’t eat as much as I usually do.

Finally got a Jumbo Turkey Leg for my Keto Lunch at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Since we did not have a reservation for lunch, it was up to me to do a little research and see what options would provide the best keto experience.  I had a little bit of a harder time trying to decide today as I was able to narrow it down to a Jumbo Turkey Leg from Yak & Yeti Quality Beverages or the ½ Chicken from Flame Tree Barbeque.  Since I had already had a ½ chicken a couple of days ago, I decided to go with the Jumbo Turkey Leg from Yak & Yeti Quality Beverages.  Since there is not a lot to choose from, the wife and kids headed over to Yak & Yeti Local Food Cafes and enjoyed some their amazing quick-service options.  For $15.99, I purchased a Jumbo Turkey Leg with chips (my kids shared my chips).  While the Jumbo Turkey Leg does have a bad rap, I think that they are a great keto option!  Don’t judge, I walked over 12 miles this day!

Back to Yak & Yeti for a Nice Keto Dinner

While we did eat at Yak & Yeti Local Foods Café for lunch, we decided to grab reservations for Yak & Yeti table service for dinner.  Not too sure why, but Yak & Yeti has always been one of my favorite restaurants.  Also, we are members of Landry’s Select Club, so we earn points for eating here which can be redeemed for free food at this location as well as any other Landry’s restaurant around the country.  After loading up on turkey for lunch, I really wasn’t that hungry, so I opted for a salad.  I have never tried a salad here before, so I decided to try the Kale Caesar Salad with Cilantro-Lime Seared Shrimp.  The only change that I had to make was having them remove the garlic-ginger wonton strips.   While garlic-ginger wonton strips do sound rather awesome, the salad was still great without them!

Keto Snacks at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

As I have done in every other park so far, I was quite thrilled to find my lovely Babybel cheese snacks.  Over in the Africa area, I found Harambe Fruit Market was selling a 6-Pack of Babybel cheese snacks for only $5.99!  I also picked up a pickle for $1.99 as well as I really enjoyed the crispy cold pickle the other day.  With the temps in the mid-90s, it was pretty nice to have a cold snack.

Other Keto Options at the Disney’s Animal Kingdom

While doing research and walking around through the park, I did come across a few other menus that looked promising for anyone doing the keto diet at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  Being that we did not want to spend too much for dinner, we did not visit Tiffin’s, but looking at their menu, it looks like they have some great options.  For appetizers, they offered an artisanal cheese platter as well as a charcuterie.  As for main entrees, they also offered a Surf & Turk, Buttered Chicken, and Pan-Seared Alaskan Halibut among others.  If I had to do this over again, I might have given Tiffin’s a try, but we will be back, and I will definitely be checking it out in the future.
